As a mountaineering instructor, my work changes with the seasons; winters are spent in the Scottish Highlands, spring and summer mean rock climbing, and autumn I’m normally busy with qualification courses. I love this variety, and meeting people from all walks of life, no two weeks are the same.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I take the most satisfaction from seeing new chapters open up to those I'm working with. That could mean having the confidence to walk in winter independently, start climbing on sea cliffs, or new and exciting work opportunities as they pass an assessment they've worked towards. Bumping into people on the hill or at the crag is the icing on the cake.
What attracted you to PYB?
I came to PyB as a 15-year-old on a climbing course and was completely inspired by the place and staff, it had a real buzz. Before then, I didn't know it was possible to have a career that involved working with people in the mountains. It was a pivotal moment for me; it's great to have come full circle and be working alongside some of the instructors who first introduced me to climbing.
What do you love about working at PYB?
At PyB there's also the bonus of my colleagues being good friends too. What's not to like?!
What advice do you have for anyone considering a career as an outdoor instructor?
If someone was considering a career in the outdoors, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it. I genuinely look forward to going to work, it's engaging, challenging, and fun. I spend time with great people, doing the things I'm passionate about.
